Here is a summary of two October 2023 U.S. Department of Education (ED) announcements that apply to higher education institutions:

FSA Electronic Announcement GENERAL-23-84, 2023 Virtual Federal Student Aid Training Conference – Registration Now Open – The 2023 Federal Student Aid Training Conference will be held November 28 – December 1. You can register for this virtual event here. There will be keynote addresses from ED leadership, five general sessions, 23 breakout sessions, and nine Virtual Exhibit Hall stations. Answers to common questions about registration are available in the Registration FAQs, and answers to questions about the conference can be found in the General FAQs.
Final Regulations: Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment – In this Federal Register notice, ED establishes and amends regulations related to gainful employment. ED noted that it seeks to enhance transparency by providing information about financial costs and benefits to students at nearly all academic programs at postsecondary institutions that are eligible to participate in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), as amended. These regulations are effective July 1, 2024.

FSA Electronic Announcement ANN-23-02, Live Internet Webinars – Wednesday Webinar Series, Fall 2023 (Updated Oct. 11, 2023) – This announcement details three two-hour webinars that will cover the most recent guidance related to a variety of topics, including Title IV policy and operational updates. These webinars, which began in September, will run through November 2023. You can register on the FSA Training Center website through the “Upcoming Webinars” link. Webinar recordings and transcripts are available in the “Recorded Training” section of the FSA Training Center.
FSA Electronic Announcement ANN-23-01, Live Internet Webinars – Better FAFSA Better Future Webinar Series, June–July 2023 (New Webinar added for Nov. 2, 2023) – This document lists all the FSA webinars regarding the changes to financial aid for the 24-25 award year. Note: To view the webinar recordings, you must log into the FSA Training Center with a username and password. Then, select the “FAFSA Simplification Training and Resources” icon on the home page to locate the recordings and transcripts.
