Cryptocurrency Considerations for Nonprofits

Cryptocurrency, especially Bitcoin, is receiving a great deal of attention, and many nonprofit leaders have questions about how their organizations might be able to benefit from this digital currency.

Here are financial reporting, tax compliance, and other considerations nonprofit organizations should think through before accepting or using cryptocurrency.

 

IRS Issues Final Regulations on UBTI “Silos”

The U.S. Treasury and IRS have published final regulations under Internal Revenue Code Section 512(a)(6), the provision requiring tax-exempt organizations with more than one unrelated trade or business to calculate unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) separately with respect to each trade or business.

The final regulations provide guidance on how an exempt organization determines if it has more than one unrelated trade or business and, if so, how the organization calculates UBTI under Section 512(a)(6). Here’s what you need to know.
