IRS to Send Affordable Care Act Inquiries to Some Churches

At a recent meeting of the Exempt Organizations Council, a senior representative of the IRS announced that the IRS will soon be sending inquiries to “several hundred” churches that are Applicable Large Employers (ALEs), as described in the Affordable Care Act. An ALE is an employer with more than 50 full-time equivalent employees.

Beyond the reference to the Affordable Care Act, no detail as to the nature or purpose of these inquiries was provided. The representative did explain that the IRS has gone to great lengths to ensure that these inquiries will comply with the Church Audit Act procedures.
