Fraud Checkup for Churches and Denominations

As Christian ministries, churches and denominations are high-trust environments. The unfortunate reality, however, is that all churches, denominations, Christian schools, and ministries are at risk for fraud – and that high level of trust can leave them more vulnerable.

In its most recent Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud and Abuse, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) noted that the top four fraud schemes at religious, charitable and social service organizations were:

  1. Corruption – 28.8%
  2. Billing – 25.0%
  3. Check tampering – 25.0%
  4. Expense reimbursements – 25.0%

And fraud comes at a high cost. According to the ACFE, organizations in this segment reported a median loss of $82,000.
